He also shares his experiences of wanting to make the New England Conservatory more inclusive by adding new programs and jazz-related courses when he was the president from 1967 to 1977. Later, he discusses how he wanted to combine classical music and jazz together to produce a third-stream, and how he explored this music style in various creative ways. In chapter 4, he describes discovering jazz music as a teenager and being fully attracted to Duke Ellington's music and how he was fascinated by its "freely, loosely, more personal" music style, which he had not experienced as a classical learner.
